Top Space Movies, Part 5

Prometheus (2012) Director: Ridley Scott / Stars: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey where they must ultimately fight to save the human race from extinction. The movie is designed to be a ‘prequel’ to Ridley Scott’s Alien 30 years before, although it sadly isn’t nearly as good.

Solaris (2002) Director: Steven Soderbergh / Stars: George Clooney, Natascha McElhone, Ulrich Tukur, Viola Davis

Love is in the air as a troubled psychologist is sent to investigate the crew of a research station orbiting an unusual planet. Same concept as Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris from 1972, but not exactly a remake.

Pandorum (2009) / Director: Christian Alvart / Stars: Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Antje Traue

A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities.

Stargate (1994) / Director: Roland Emmerich / Stars: Kurt Russell, James Spader, Alexis Cruz, Jaye Davidson

A worm-hole portal is found in Egypt that leads to a planet populated by a race that worship the god Ra.

Spaceballs (1987) / Director: Mel Brooks / Stars: Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman

In this wacky send-up of Star Wars and other space adventures, President Skroob sends Lord Dark Helmet to steal Planet Druidia’s air supply. Only Lone Starr (Pullman) can stop them.
